Three things people notice first

Most water problems in Greater Richmond come down to one of these three. Each one is treated differently, which is why the assessment comes first.

Chloramine at every tap

Richmond's Department of Public Utilities disinfects with chloramine, chlorine bound to ammonia. Water leaving the Richmond plant averaged 3.8 parts per million in 2025, with single readings from 2.9 to 5.1, and the running average sits inside the 4 parts per million limit. Unlike free chlorine it does not fade out of a glass left on the counter, so the taste and smell at the kitchen sink are the same as in the shower. River water, and what disinfection leaves behind

Every drop of Richmond city water starts in the James River. The plant on its banks treated an average of 64.2 million gallons a day in 2025 for about 75,000 customers. Chloramine reacting with the organic material in river water leaves byproducts behind: total trihalomethanes averaged 39 parts per billion in 2025 and reached 59 at their highest, and haloacetic acids averaged 24. The federal limits of 80 and 60 are the line a utility must stay under to be in compliance, not a sign the water is free of them. These byproducts reach every tap in the house, and the levels rise and fall through the year. Three plants, and which one feeds your street

Greater Richmond is not one water system, so the water at your tap depends on which plant serves your address. Henrico County treats about 25 million gallons a day at its own James River plant, with ozone first and carbon filters before the chloramine goes in, and buys another 13 million a day from the city. Chesterfield County blends Swift Creek Reservoir, Lake Chesdin and city water from the James. Different sources and different treatment mean the water is not the same from one street to the next, so a system chosen for a neighbor's water can be the wrong one for yours. That is why we start by working out which plant feeds your house. Sources: Henrico County Public Utilities and Chesterfield County Utilities, 2025 Water Quality Reports.

Chlorine, chloramine and PFAS

And the stuff you cannot taste.

Chlorine

You can usually taste it.

Chloramine

Most people cannot.

PFAS

Nobody can.

Which is why the assessment starts with what your utility publishes about Greater Richmond water, not a guess.

Questions we get asked

If yours is not here, send it with your assessment request. There is no wrong question about your own water.

We call and go through your water with you. Then you get the system we would put in and the exact price. The assessment is free.

The number we put in writing is the number. If something in your house would change it, you hear about it before any work starts.

Wherever the water enters the house, usually a basement, a utility room or a garage.

Enough floor for the tanks plus room to open the cabinet lid and get to the bypass.

Top up the cabinet when it runs low. That is the whole routine, and the setup notes cover it.

Yes. A private supply changes through the year, so it gets sized differently from a municipal one. We handle both.
