The water softener
One softener where the water enters the house, for homes where scale is the problem and the taste is not.
Dealing with Taste or smell · Scale on everything · Staining · A well · Nothing you can taste
The softener and its salt cabinet. About the footprint of a small chest freezer.
Some of what it takes care of
Scale on fixtures, faucets and shower doors
Soap that will not lather, and spots on the glasses
Buildup in the water heater and anything else that heats water
It is not built for chlorine taste or smell. If the assessment finds that too, the whole home mixed bed does both in one tank.
The system
A softener tank and a salt cabinet where the water enters the house. It takes the hardness out before the water reaches any tap, and rinses itself with salt from the cabinet. Keeping the cabinet filled is the only job it leaves you.
The drinking water stage
Reverse osmosis can go under the kitchen sink, on its own faucet, for drinking and cooking water. More on the RO system
The number
Priced in writing
Tank size comes from how many people are in the house and how much water it uses. The exact number goes in writing before anything is ordered. Want taste and smell handled too? The mixed bed does both.

The softener uses it to rinse itself. You will notice the cabinet level drop over weeks, not days, and refilling it is the whole maintenance routine.
A softener is not built for taste or smell. If chlorine taste is part of the problem, the whole home mixed bed adds a carbon stage in the same tank.
Every tap gets softened water. For drinking and cooking water, reverse osmosis can go under the kitchen sink on its own faucet.
